Gooseberry in brine/ nellikka uppilittathu

We were travelling sometime ago and we stopped at a road side shop to have this.

The lady was an adivasi or a tribal who sold salted mangoes and gooseberries among other things for a living.

I HAD to make salted gooseberry!

Gooseberry
Salt
Water
Green chilli
Vinegar

Take a clean dry glass bottle. Measure water half way up and pour into another vessel. Keep this for boiling.

Now into the glass bottle arrange the gooseberries and green chilli. Top with salt.

Let the water boil really well and cool down to room temperature.
Pour this over the gooseberry.

Pour 1 tbsp vinegar.

Now we wait a week!! Then....

The water has turned murky. Gooseberry and green chilli don't look 'fresh'.

It is going to taste yum!!

If you get bored of eating the salty gooseberry, try making this traditional curry / chutney - Arachu kalakki.
